Prepare for a life changing experience when you join us with LIGHT Photographic Workshops for an Alaskan photography immersion. The sheer volume and quality of amazing subjects and opportunities are unrivaled by any other photo adventure; whether shooting wildlife, landscapes, and creating a panoramic or HDR, get ready to photograph in a “target rich environment.” This adventure is based almost entirely on a yacht. The boat is not of a large cruise ship size. Our yacht is small and stable. The advantages of the Northern Song yacht, is that we can get closer to water level images and to our subjects than on larger vessel for photography unmatched anywhere else in Alaska. Our yacht is ideal for photography.
To ensure each person reaches the best level of photography, this trip is limited to 6 participants. With a client to leader ratio of 3:1, as a photographer you will always have the guidance, technical and artistic support needed to make the best images.
This photo adventure does not have a set itinerary or daily schedule. Instead we will depart Petersburg, AK and follow the predators that pursue the Pacific Herring. The high calorie, oil rich herring are a critical part of the diet of Bald Eagles, orca, harbor seals, otters, Steller sea lions, humpback whales, and a myriad of gulls and sea birds. After a long winter, they are all ready to feed. With eagles soaring overhead, Steller sea lions and humpback whales cruise near the shoreline before rushing and lunging through the huge schools of herring. The eagles attack from the air and surface gorging on the small, silvery fish. Photographing from the yacht, we will be in the middle of the action for close up images of this magnificent annual wonder of nature.
All of the action is set against one of the most spectacular backdrops anywhere on the planet, South East Alaska and the Inside Passage of Alaska’s Southwest. Here we will see dramatic glacier covered mountains rise sharply from the calm, blue waters providing a landscape photographer’s dream. Pine, spruce, and fir are everywhere giving us a beautiful background of a rich, dark green; a beautiful background to all of our action shots.
We will explore the Inside Passage of Alaska’s Southwest and photograph its incredible scenery including close up visits to huge calving glaciers, dramatic fjords, and isolated islands. Shore excursions will be available where we we get up close and personal with the incredible temperate rain forest of the Tongass.
The Northern Song, captained by Dennis Rogers, will be our home, transport, and shooting platform for the photo adventure. The Northern Song is an 85’ luxury yacht with a crew of three: Captain Dennis Rogers, First Mate, and Chef. With spacious and comfortable staterooms, amazing food, and a Captain who puts the yacht in position for the perfect shot, you will love the Northern Song.
What about motion sickness? The yacht has stabilizers making it very smooth and we will be in the calm waters of the inside passage and not in the open ocean. If it does get windy we will find refuge near the shore. In the four years of doing the trip, no one has had any problems with motion sickness.
Captain Rogers has over 30 years experience sailing Alaskan waters. The professional crew and the best navigation and safety gear ensure a safe and productive cruise.
